The Honorable Paul E. Singleton_myLawCLEThe Honorable Paul E. Singleton, Judge | United States Bankruptcy Court Northern District of Indiana

Judge Singleton earned his bachelor’s degree with honors from Wake Forest University and his law degree, with Pro Bono Distinction, from the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University. Before attending law school, Judge Singleton taught social studies for Teach for America at National Academy Foundation High School in Baltimore. After graduating from law school in 2009, he worked at Indiana Legal Services where he practiced family and landlord/tenant law. He then joined the Family Justice Center of St. Joseph County where he handled cases involving civil protective orders. His professional experience also includes private practice in employment law at Faegre Baker Daniels (now Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP), service as Assistant City Attorney for the City of South Bend, and Magistrate Judge for the St. Joseph Superior Court where he presided over criminal and civil cases.

 

Bingxin (Emily) Lu_myLawCLEBingxin (Emily) Lu, Law Clerk | United States Bankruptcy Court Northern District of Indiana

Emily Lu is a law clerk for the Honorable Paul E. Singleton. She was a judicial extern for Judge Singleton during her last semester of law school. While in law school, her strong interest in bankruptcy law also led to an opportunity for an externship at the Department of Justice, U.S. Trustee Program. Ms. Lu earned her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She then attended Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law and graduated in 2022. Before joining the Indiana Northern District Bankruptcy Court, she was a Deputy Attorney General in the Litigation Division of Indiana Attorney General’s Office. In that role, she handled matters related to administrative law, judicial review, and qui tam actions.

Brian M. Ortiz serves as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Paul E. Singleton. He previously worked as a law clerk to the Honorable Chief Judge Heather Z. Cooper at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Vermont. Prior to clerking, he attended The University of Iowa College of Law, where he developed an interest in the intersection of law and business.
